Social Emotional Learning
We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. It is a holistic view of the individual that moves beyond just the academic part of school. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
At New Urban High School we practice SEL in the following ways:
-
Direct instruction taught monthly to all classes
-
Peer Mediation practices
-
Restorative circles
-
In-class circle processes
-
Mindfulness practices
-
Girls circle
-
De-stressing practices in our wellness room
By practicing social emotional learning, New Urban strives to build trusting and collaborative relationships, empowering students and staff to contribute to a safe, healthy, and just school. Our goals move beyond equity, and towards justice. SEL can help us find that vision.
